She was the incredibly brave lady who saved as many as 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto; Irena Sendler was her name, and she has been immortalized for her humanitarian work that has few parallels. She carried on working in a political scenario where Russia and Germany together threatened the sovereignty of Poland. The Jewish people were subjected to humiliation and torture by the Nazis. Children suffered the most, being used even as guinea pigs for horrible medical experiments. In his fearful environment, Irena toiled tirelessly, often at great risk to her life. Despite her great role in the salvation of thousands of Jewish children and their future, the great lady herself shunned any credit, always choosing to keep herself away from awards and recognition.
